What are the advantages and disadvantages of digital printing? What kind of printing can be printed with it?
What is digital printing?
In digital printing, files are transferred directly from the computer to the printing press, and the ink is applied to the substrate. The print head moves across the substrate in sections, similar to an inkjet printer at home (inkjet process). This means that specially made printing plates are not used.
Digital printing processes differ from printing processes that require the use of special printing plates, such as offset printing.
Why is digital printing suitable for small runs?
Thanks to the high precision and quality of colour and detail reproduction, digital printing is ideal for producing high-quality printed products in small print runs. Faster production compared to offset printing allows for shorter lead times, which is especially beneficial for short-term marketing campaigns or events. In addition, personalisation is possible with digital printing.
In general, digital printing is a cost-effective way to produce individual and professional printed products in small print runs without loss of quality.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of digital printing?
Unlike processes using printing plates, each image is created from scratch in digital printing. This can lead to minor variations between individual copies of the print run. However, this fact is also a big advantage: each individual page can be personalized. In terms of printing speed for large print runs, digital printing machines cannot compete with offset printing machines. Therefore, they are used mainly for small print runs.
